Since 1971, Dalhousie University's Centre for Foreign Policy Studies (CFPS) has been an integral part of the Department of Political Science. The Centre is concerned with teaching, research, the provision of policy advice and commentary, and other professional activities in a wide-range of highly topical subjects that includes Canadian and comparative foreign and defence policy, maritime security, oceans policy, and international security and development.
As we move into our second quarter-century, the Centre's activities and interests largely fall within four broad categories:
* maritime security and oceans policy;
* Canadian defence policy;
* Canadian foreign policy; and
* global security and development
We intend to remain active in those fields well into the next millennium.
As one of Canada's leading policy analysis institutes, the Centre maintains extensive links with other centres of excellence in our areas of interest. The tradition of excellence, begun in 1971, has been continued through the active involvement of Faculty and Research Fellows in the Centre's core programs. As in any "leading-edge" endeavour, it is the people who actually make the various programmes come to life. In this aspect, we are richly endowed. In adddition to the many members of the university faculty who actively support the Centre's various activities, we have a strong community of over thirty Research Fellows and a dozen Doctoral Fellows. In addition to a relatively small core of eight Research Fellows actually working in the Centre on a day-to-day basis or contractual basis, this professional network extends across Canada and into many other countries. In most cases, contact is now maintained electronically by e-mail and through the Centre's Home Page on the internet.
